COMMUNITY FAMILY HOUSING
WHAT IS SUBSIDiZED COMMUNITY FAMILY HOUSING?
Bow Valley Regional Housing manages 58 townhouses and houses in Canmore that are available to qualifying households from across the region:
- This program is geared to low-income households that include dependent children.
- The portfolio includes two-bedroom, three-bedroom and four-bedroom residences in a mix of condominiums and stand-alone houses.
- Rent is set at 30% of gross household income. (There may be other charges)
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THIS PROGRAM?
- Must have lived in the Region for at least the past 6 months unless we have more than five (5) vacant residences at which point there is no residency requirement in effect.
- Must have children living with them
- Must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada or Government of Canada sponsored refugees
- Must have a total household income below the stipulated Core Need Income Threshold "CNIT" established by the Province for each municipality
How Are Housing Applications Processed?
They are assessed according to the Social Housing Accommodation Regulation of the Alberta Housing Act. This process includes an evaluation resulting in the assignment of a “point score” which measures the priority of need.
They are awarded points based on the following factors:
- Number of dependents and any overcrowding situations
- Percentage of income going to rent and utility payments
- Eviction due to reasons other than a breach of the tenancy agreement
- Certain emergency situations including family violence
- Accessibility challenges
- Accommodation causing or aggravating serious health problems or that is unsafe
